Training Programme on Developing Climate Change Adaptation Projects for the Green Climate Fund

RRC.AP conducted a 5-day training programme in Bangkok followed by a learning-by-doing approach that was aimed at developing capacities to prepare concept notes specifically for the Simplified Approval Process (SAP) pilot scheme of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The training was represented by 24 participants from National Designated Authorities, Direct Access Entities and partner institutions from Micronesia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, and Sri Lanka.


Workshop on Enhancing Resilient Livelihoods to Address the Climate Change-Disasters-Poverty Nexus in Asia

A Regional Synthesis Workshop on Enhancing Resilient Livelihoods to Address the Climate Change, Disasters and Poverty Nexus in Asia, was convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and RRC.AP.

The aim of this event was to share and review the findings of three country-specific case studies developed by FAO with the aim to strengthen capacities of three countries - Bangladesh, Myanmar and Vietnam - to understand the climate change-disaster-poverty nexus, identify implementation models that address this nexus effectively, and make recommendations to incorporate these models into country policy and planning processes.

The participants at this workshop included government officials from relevant ministries (including Agriculture, Rural Development, Urban Development, Social Welfare, Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change/Environment) and study teams from the three target countries.


Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing with International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)

Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in July 2018. The objective of the MoU is to establish a regional cooperation framework between the countries of the Himalaya and the countries of the Mekong Region to promote efforts on climate change mitigation in the Himalayas and the Mekong region to reduce and avoid the adverse effects of climate change on the Himalayas and the Mekong region, with special focus on emission reduction of short lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) (in particular black carbon particles) and forest landscape restoration. Both organizations share concern about the effects of climate change on the Himalayas and Mekong Region and recognize a need to promote regional efforts to address climate change issue in the regions. Both organizations agreed to jointly implements activities, such as, conducting research and assessment, publication of reports, organizing workshops, seminars, training, etc. and assist the countries of the Himalayas and the Mekong region in planning and making strategies for emission reduction of black carbon particles and forest landscape restoration. The Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) is responsible for implementation of the activities on behalf of AIT.


Meeting with Wongpanit Co. Ltd.

On 4th July 2018, Dr. Vilas Nitivattananon of UEM faculty in SERD-AIT and Mr. Guilberto Borongan of AIT RRC.AP met with Dr. Somthai Wongcharoen, President and Owner of Wongpanit International Co. Ltd. to explore potential waste partnerships on recycling business models. The aim of the proposed concept proposal is developing and running a regional/international academic program in the business model for eco-innovation with a focus on waste/resources recycling. The expected outcome of this project is to encourage the reduction of waste generation and waste diversion in Southeast Asian countries.


Meeting with NIES and IOT Council of Waste Management and Recycling

The AIT RRC.AP Waste Management Cluster welcomed five Japanese delegates from the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and IOT Council of Waste Management and Recycling on 9th July 2018. With an exchange of introductory presentation about RRC.AP and IOT Council respectively, the meeting explored possibilities of partnership for joint research projects on the application of the internet of things (IOT) in the waste sector. As an initial discussion, RRC.AP and AIT Solutions joint project idea on smart waste in Ulaanbaatar (UB) Mongolia, which aims to mobilize youth and apply IOT technologies for tracking waste data/analytics from households in two pilot districts of Ulaanbaatar City, was shared with the delegates.


The 9th Asian Co-benefits Partnership (ACP) Advisory Group Meeting

AIT RRCAP is a member organization to the Asian Co-benefits Partnership (ACP) launched in 2010, with Secretariat hosted by Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Headquarters, Japan. The ACP seeks to collaborate with organizations working to mainstream co-benefits into decision making process in Asia. Many actions mitigate climate change while simultaneously delivering other development benefits such as cleaner air, healthier communities and greener cities. Ms. Adelaida B. Roman of AIT RRC.AP's Air and Atmospheric Pollution Cluster participated in the 9th Asian Co-benefits Partnership (ACP) Advisory Group Meeting held in Yokohama, Japan on 19 July 2018. The meeting discussed the dissemination strategy for co-benefits, the plan for the 4th White Paper for co-benefits, and the Work Plan for 2018-2019, among others. AIT RRC.AP Participated in Workshop Organized by Green Climate Fund
24th-26th July 2018

AIT RRC.AP attended the Learning-Oriented Real-Time Impact Assessment (LORTA) Design Workshop organized by the Independent Evaluation Unit of the Green Climate Fund on 24-26 July 2018 at the UN Service Building in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop was attended by 58 participants from 23 countries around the world including development agencies, international financial institutions, and accredited entities to the GCF.
AIT RRC.AP worked along with the GCF Private Sector Unit, UNDP, Ministry of Energy of Mongolia, and XacBank to develop a draft impact evaluation design for FP028: Business loan program for GHG emissions reduction in Mongolia project of the XacBank. By the end of August, the GCF-IEU will select 4-6 projects among the 15 projects taken up in the workshop to be included in the LORTA pilot and will notify the corresponding working groups.


AIT RRC.AP co-organized a Conference Entitled "Bangkok Conference on Science, Technology, and Innovation for Addressing Wildlife and Forest Crimes and Attaining SDGs"

AIT RRC.AP was involved in providing live streaming services and co-organizing the conference entitled 'Bangkok Conference on Science, Technology, and Innovation for Addressing Wildlife and Forest Crimes and Attaining SDGs' with AIT Solutions on 28-30 August 2018 in Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. The conference delved into three key issues governments are facing in their efforts to address illegal taking, trading and trafficking of protected species. It outlined the available (technological, infrastructural, financial and governance) support for national governments to advance the whole-of the-state approach and institute a mechanism for enhanced international cooperation to systematically tackle the transnational organized crime spanning across the globe. Best Available Techniques for Preventing and Controlling Industrial Pollution, Activity 2: Approaches to Establishing Best Available Techniques (BAT) Around the World

In 2017, RRC.AP has supported the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in survey and compilation of Best Available Techniques (BAT) used for prevention and control of chemical pollution in India and China. RRC.AP, along with OECD, has conducted stakeholder consultations both countries and made a report on BAT in India and China, separately. Report on BAT in India was drafted by Dr. Ram Lal Verma, while report on BAT in China was drafted by Dr. Mara Regina Mendes, Mr. Guilberto Borongan, and Timothy Lam. Also, these reports were presented during the Expert Group Meeting on Best Available Techniques organized by OECD at the European Commission IPPC Bureau Joint Research Centre, Seville, Spain, during 14-15 November 2017

In June 2018, OECD has published a report "Best Available Techniques for Preventing and Controlling Industrial Pollution, Activity 2: Approaches to Establishing Best Available Techniques (BAT) Around the World" in which the report on India and China, drafted by RRCAP, has been included as a separate chapter, mentioning contribution of RRC.AP.


Publication of Proceedings of the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET): Seventeenth Session of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC17)

RRC.AP in partnership with the Secretariat for the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network (EANET) based in United Nations Environment – Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok, Thailand, published a report on the proceedings of the Seventeenth Session of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC17) meeting on the EANET, organized in Pathumthani, Thailand, during 26 – 28 September 2017. The meeting discussed and shared scientific achievements pertaining to acid deposition in East Asian region and drafted recommendations to the Intergovernmental Meeting on new scientific goals for coming years on acid deposition monitoring in the region. Printed copies of the report of SAC17 proceedings have been sent to the SAC members of the EANET member countries and to Network Center based in Niigata, Japan.

RRC.AP in partnership with the Secretariat for the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network (EANET) based in United Nations Environment – Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok, Thailand, published a report on the proceedings of the Nineteenth Session of the Intergovernmental Meeting (IG19) on the EANET, organized in Siam Reap, Cambodia, during 13 – 14 November 2017. The meeting discussed and made decisions on cooperation among the EANET member countries based on the recommendations made by the SAC 17 on acid deposition in East Asia. Printed copies of the report of the IG19 proceedings have been sent to EANET member countries and to Network Center based in Niigata, Japan.

New Interns
Thu Zar Naing Lin

Ms. Thu Zar Naing Lin has recently completed her Master's degree in Urban Environmental Management from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. With her interest in urban waste management issues, she joined the Waste Management Cluster at RRC.AP as an intern. During her internship, she will be conducting desk research on climate co-benefits of waste management by exploring the Greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential from Anaerobic Digestion of residual organic waste management from wholesale fruits and vegetable markets. Ms. Thu also holds a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from West Yangon Technological University, Yangon, Myanmar, and had two years of teaching experience.
